Why Is My Heat Pump in Madison, MS, Blowing Cold?

Heat pumps keep homeowners in Madison, MS, comfortable in winter as they heat the indoor air, creating a warm living space. However, there are times when these systems fail to supply the much-needed warm air, leaving you cold and miserable. Let’s discuss why a heat pump blows cold air while in heating mode.

Broken Reversing Valve

Your heat pump moves heat from one area to another with the help of refrigerant. When you need the heat pump to cool your house during summer, the refrigerant absorbs heat at the indoor coil and transports it to the outdoor coil, which releases it to the surroundings. If you need the system to warm your home, the reversing valve changes the direction of the refrigerant’s flow. As a result, the fluid starts transporting heat from the outdoor coil to the indoor coil.

When the valve breaks down during the winter, it can no longer change the direction of the refrigerant’s flow. The refrigerant continues transferring heat from your indoor air to the surroundings instead of the other way around. That’s how you know it’s time to schedule heat pump repair services to have the reversing valve fixed.

HVAC Thermostat Problems

When winter comes, you need to change the thermostat settings from “Cool” to “Heat.” If the thermostat remains in cooling mode in winter, it’ll continue to prompt the heat pump to cool your home.

Clogged Filter in the Heat Pump

An air filter clogs when it catches multiple pollutants and remains unchanged. The clogged filter fails to let enough air enter the heat pump.

The system doesn’t get enough air to heat, so your home remains cold. Replace the filter every 30 to 60 days to allow the system to draw enough air to heat.

Instead of continuing to speculate why your system fails to heat your house, allow a service technician to correctly diagnose and fix the underlying issue.
