Why Won’t Your Furnace Ignite in Brandon, MS?
Most homeowners in Brandon, MS, use a furnace to generate and distribute heat. Assuming that your furnace won’t ignite and is less than 15 years old, check for underlying problems before settling for a replacement. Here are a few possible reasons your furnace won’t ignite and what to do about it:
Defective Thermostat
A malfunctioning thermostat can interrupt the power supply directly or through its wiring connections, which in turn stops the furnace from igniting. Newer electronic thermostats often display an error code if something is amiss.
Gas Line Issues
Malfunctioning gas valves, blocked gas lines and gas leaks are common gas line issues. You can identify these issues when you experience difficulty lighting appliances connected to the same line.
Dirty Furnace Filter
A clogged filter restricts airflow, preventing the furnace’s pilot light or gas valve from lighting up. Replacing your furnace filters every few months can address the issue.
Faulty Pilot Light
A malfunctioning pilot light will not ignite the main burner and thus cause the system to shut down. This could happen because the thermocouple has moved out of position. It can also occur if the fuel line is clogged and there’s not enough gas to ignite.
Broken Flame Sensor
The sensor turns off gas burners to prevent gas build-up. A broken flame sensor cannot detect whether or not the burners are on and will prevent them from lighting. A flame sensor that’s not correctly working can sometimes cause other components, like the gas valve and pilot light, to fail, leading to a non-igniting furnace.
